BLACKSBURG – Redshirt-junior Kyle Wernicki’s two-out bunt single in the eighth frame with runners on the corners brought home sophomore Phil Sciretta from third to score the game and series clinching run as Team Autism Awareness won the Virginia Tech baseball Fall World Series three games to two with the 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at English Field.

Sciretta, who doubled to lead off the eighth, then moved to third on a foul out to first base – Ryan Burns made a great play to catch the ball wall falling over the wall, but it enabled Sciretta to move the extra base.

After sophomore Matt Dauby was hit by a pitch, Wernicki came through with the hit scoring Sciretta, who was named the series’ MVP. The Duxbury, Mass., native hit .545 for the week (6 for 11) with two doubles, five runs scored and three RBIs. He also tossed four innings in a start on Saturday, allowing just one run in another comeback extra-inning win for TAA.

Team Stop Bullying opened the day’s scoring in the first on a three-run home run by sophomore Ryan Burns that plated both redshirt-freshman Saige Jenco and junior Sean Keselica.

TAA starter freshman Nick Anderson settled down the rest of the way, retiring the last 10 batters he faced. He allowed just the one hit over four innings and struck out five batters. The TAA bullpen combined for four innings and allowed no runs, four hits and one walk, while its squad made the comeback.

Sciretta doubled and scored on a Dauby sacrifice fly in the second, freshman Miguel Ceballos scored on a passed ball in the fourth and junior Eric Payne drove home Sciretta, who had walked, to tie the game in the sixth.

The Hokies will play just one more game this fall, hosting their second annual ALS Awareness Halloween game on Monday night at English Field. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to wear costumes as well. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
