BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech baseball players Tyler Horan and Jake Joyce both heard their names called during the second day of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, which pushed the overall total of Hokies chosen in the 2013 MLB draft to three through the first 10 rounds.

Horan, a redshirt-junior outfielder, was the 252nd overall pick, chosen in the eighth round by the San Francisco Giants. He became the 14th highest Hokie ever chosen in the MLB draft with his selection. Only one other time have the Giants taken a player from Virginia Tech, back in the 2005 draft when they picked Chris Stanton in the 43rd round.

Joyce, a senior relief pitcher, was the 286th overall pick, chosen in the ninth round by the Washington Nationals. All-time, he was one pick behind Brad Clontz, who was taken in the 1992 draft by the Atlanta Braves with the 285th pick. Clontz became a relief pitcher, played six years of pro ball and is one of two Hokies to win World Series rings.

Washington has taken just two other Virginia Tech players, Tim Smalling back in 2010 in the 14th round, but he chose to return to Blacksburg, and Sherwood Hahn, a 14th-round pick back in 1968 by the Washington Senators.

The draft concluded on Friday with picks through the first 10 rounds. With the Hokies' three selections, it matches the number of selections through 10 rounds with the 1982 squad and is one behind the 2010 team that had four players taken through 10 rounds.

In 2010, a record eight Hokies were chosen in the draft, while the second most is the 1982 draft when five were chosen.

The final rounds of the draft, rounds 11-40 will take place on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
