BLACKSBURG, Va. - With the 71st selection of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the Oakland Athletics picked junior shortstop Chad Pinder, in the Competitive Balance Round B, as he becomes the seventh highest ever Tech selection in the MLB draft.

His pick was just two in front of Kevin Barker, who was chosen with the 73rd pick of the 1996 draft, and he's the highest draft choice since Joe Saunders was selected with the 12th pick in the 2002 draft. Pinder is the sixth highest Tech player drafted, as Brad DuVall was taken in back-to-back years in the first round.

Oakland has chosen three other Hokies in the draft, the last was pitcher Denny Wagner, who was the 42nd overall pick of the 1997 draft, in the Competitive Balance Round A.

The 2013 draft will continue with rounds three through 10 on Friday, June 7 starting at 1 p.m., and rounds 11-40 are on Saturday, June 8 also with a 1 p.m. start.
