The weekend: Tech continues its 120th season of baseball with its 10th trip to the NCAA Baseball Championship, which for the first time will see a regional site be contested at English Field in Blacksburg, Va.
History in the NCAA Championship: The Hokies’ last trip to the NCAAs included a 2-2 showing at the 2010 Columbia, S.C. regional. It marked only the second time in their nine prior trips that the Hokies won more than one game in the tournament. They also won two in the 1954 NCAAs.
Coming in hot: Virginia Tech enters the 2013 NCAA Baseball Championship winners of eight of its last nine and are 13-2 in its last 15 and 16-3 in its last 19. With their two-game sweep of Wake Forest that ended the regular season, the Hokies were the only ACC team that could claim four ACC series wins entering last weekend’s ACC Championship. They continued that in the ACC tournament, winning three straight to advance to Sunday’s title game before dropping a 4-1 decision to North Carolina.
Hokies opponents this weekend: Tech has played each team in the Blacksburg Regional at least once, but outside of Coastal Carolina, it hasn’t been recent. Oklahoma and the Hokies have met just once, March 26, 1978 in Nashville, Tenn. A game won by Tech, 4-2. All-time against Big 12 teams, Tech is 54-32-1 (with 84 games against West Virginia). Coastal Carolina and the Hokies have met seven times in the last seven years, but only once after March 1 (last year in mid-April). Against Big South teams, Tech is 260-102-2. Connecticut and Tech haven’t played since 2004, when the Hokies left for the ACC. Against current BIG EAST teams, the Hokies own a 156-98-2 all-time mark.
The senior class: Tech’s senior class this year was before the Wake Forest cancelled game on May 18. The four-year seniors - Jake Joyce, Clark Labitan, Joe Mantiply and Andrew Rash - enter this weekend with 142 career wins over the past four seasons. That ties the 1990 class for the most wins in a four-year span at the school since 1988. Only Rash was born (Nov. 11, 1989) when the 1990 class won its last game (May 19). The senior class that graduated in 1988 posted 160 wins.
The senior class - part two: With Tech’s 2013 NCAA postseason appearance, it marks just the ninth time that a senior class will be involved in two NCAA tournaments at the school. The following classes all played in at least two NCAA tournaments - 1977, 1978, 1979, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2013. The 2000 senior class is the only one that played in three.2000 senior class is the only one that played in three.
