Coming in hot: Virginia Tech enters the 2013 ACC Baseball Championship winners of five in a row and are 10-1 in its last 11 games and are 13-2 in its last 15. With their two-game sweep of Wake Forest last week, the Hokies are the only ACC team that can claim four ACC series wins coming into the ACC Championship.
Ironically, only Virginia and Florida State - Tech’s first two opponents this week - can claim three ACC series wins in the team’s last four conference weekends, with the Seminoles winning three straight - their only loss a sweep at Virginia in week seven of the ACC schedule - while the Cavaliers have two in a row and three of four - their only loss was to the Hokies in week eight of the ACC slate.
Lastly, only Virginia can claim more wins over the last four weeks - nine - than the eight that Tech has won (also had one game cancelled). The eight wins match the number won by NC State over the past four weeks, while FSU’s seven league wins is the fourth most.
Four straight ACC series wins: As just stated, the Hokies won its fourth straight ACC series with their two-game sweep of Wake Forest in the league’s final weekend. It marked the first time in their history in the ACC that they won four straight. During the 2010 season, Tech won three series in a row two times, the most ever before this year’s streak.
Also, as just started, the Hokies have won eight games over the past four weeks, tying the most wins ever during ACC play in a four-week span. They also did that twice during the 2010 season and once during the 2011 season. They had a chance to go for nine, but game three of the Wake Forest series was cancelled due to rain.
A best in the ACC final standings: During the 2010 season, the Hokies earned the No. 6 seed in the ACC Baseball Championship after a 16-14 mark in conference, while they finished fourth in the Coastal Division. And although, the 15-14 final league record in the 2013 season is one less win from matching its best mark ever in conference play and earned the team the No. 6 seed again, Tech’s third-place finish in the Coastal Division is its best finish as a member of the ACC.
Reaching the 35-win plateau: With its win over Wake Forest on Friday, the Hokies reached the 35-win plateau for only the second time since the 1999 season, when the team won 42 games. The other season was 2010, when the Hokies won 40.
In fact, since 1986 (the last of three straight seasons the team won at least 38 games), only four seasons has the team won more than 35 games, adding in the 36 won in 1990 and the 40 in 1988.
Championship experience: The Hokies have five players on its roster this year listed as a senior or redshirt-senior. Of those five, just two have any ACC Championship experience - pitcher Joe Mantiply and outfielder Andrew Rash, while Jake Joyce did not see any action, Clark Labitan was redshirting the season due to injury and Tanner McIntyre was at a junior college.
Mantiply’s experience includes just 1.1 innings of work - with a full inning against NC State. He has allowed two hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out two of the six batters he has faced.
Rash started in all three games of the 2010 championship getting 12 at-bats. His numbers include five hits - including a double and two home runs - three runs and five RBI. His biggest hit was his three-run home run against NC State.
