RADFORD, Va. – No. 25 Virginia Tech got out of the gates early on Radford and then held on for a 4-3 victory in non-conference action at RU Baseball Stadium Tuesday evening. It was the team’s eighth straight win at Radford and the Hokies have now won 16-of-17 against the Highlanders since 2004.
Tech improved to 28-18 overall with the win and is now 8-2 against schools from the Commonwealth this season. With the loss, Radford drops its overall mark to 24-19.
Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two frames. Alex Perez came home on a wild pitch to open the scoring in the first, and then Chad Morgan plated Brendon Hayden with a single in the second to make it 2-0.
The Hokies added two more in the frame on a pair of RBI doubles by Ryan Burns and Sean Keselica, which scored Morgan and Burns. From there, the offense was stymied and it was up to the pitchers to hold on for the win.
Hayden got the start on the mound for Tech and allowed just one run on one hit – both in the second frame – and struck out two in four innings of work. He improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.
Sean Kennedy tossed three frames in relief, allowing one run as well, on four hits and struck out one, while Brad Markey worked a scoreless eighth with a pair of strikeouts.
Clark Labitan threw the ninth and allowed a run, but picked up his seventh save of the season, which is the most by a Hokie reliever since 2004 – Ricky Bowers.
Keselica, Hayden, Morgan and Burns all had two hits for Tech, while Perez walked three times, tying his career high. He leads the team with 33, which is among the top 10 in the ACC.
Tech will stay on the road for its next set of games – its final regular season road games of the year – as the team travels to Massachusetts for a three-game ACC series at Boston College. The first game on Friday starts at 2:30 p.m.
