COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Virginia Tech starting pitcher Devin Burke tossed his first collegiate complete game in a winning effort as the Hokies defeated Maryland, 3-2, on Sunday at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium on Sunday, and with it, helped Tech win the ACC series over the Terrapins, 2-1.

Tech, which is now 12-3 in its last 15 games versus the Terrapins, improved to 24-17 and 9-12 in the ACC, while Maryland dropped to 21-20 overall, 6-15 in the conference.

Burke followed up game two Joe Mantiply’s quality start yesterday by holding Maryland scoreless for the first four frames while the Hokies built a two-run lead.

However, in the bottom of the fifth, back-to-back triples by Blake Schmit and Charlie White was followed by a sac fly from Jordan Hagel that tied the game at 2-2.

Tech broke the tie in the seventh with Chad Pinder singling home Alex Perez with a go-ahead run, the second run of the game scored by Perez.

Burke took it from there, working out of a 1st and 3rd two-out jam in the seventh with a fly ball to center and threw the final two frames perfect to improve his record to 6-3 on the season. He scattered five hits and walked two batters, while striking out two.

Tech got on the board in the fourth on a two-out RBI double from Andrew Rash, the 50th two-bagger of his career, which brought in Mark Zagunis. Perez, who also had two singles on the day, crossed the plate on a two-out double by Sean Keselica in the fifth.

Tech will stay on the road for its next game, travelling to Lexington, Va., to face VMI on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start time before turning its attention to a home ACC series with top 10 Virginia at English Field.
