RALEIGH, N.C. – In almost a carbon copy of Friday’s start, No. 22 Virginia Tech took an early lead on No. 25 NC State only to see it slip away and this time the Wolfpack did not allow a Hokie comeback and recorded a 13-4 victory in ACC action on Saturday at Doak Field.
With the win, NC State improves to 23-10 on the year, 7-7 in the conference while the Hokies drop to 21-11, and also 7-7 in the ACC.
Tech used an RBI double from Chad Morgan, scoring Alex Perez, and an RBI single by Chad Pinder, which plated Morgan, to take a 2-0 lead in the third. However, they couldn’t capitalize any more and left the bases loaded in the frame.
NC State tied the game at two with a pair in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly by Logan Ratledge and an RBI double by Trea Turner. Before that Hokie started Devin Burke was cruising as he faced one over the minimum through the first four frames.
The Hokies answered the two more in the top of the sixth as Brendon Hayden scored on a wild pitch and Andrew Rash plated Kyle Wernicki on a squeeze play and Tech was back up two at 4-2.
However, the Wolfpack mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame to seize control of the game. Nine straight men reached base with the key hits being a bases-loaded triple by Ratledge and a two-RBI single by Brett Austin to take a 9-4 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Tech used its own two-out rally to load the bases on a pair of walks sandwiched around a Morgan double, the only Hokie with two hits in the game. However, they left the bases loaded for the second time – they stranded 11 in the contest – and the Wolfpack would then tack on four of their own in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final difference.
Burke suffered the loss for the Hokies and is now 5-2, while NC State’s third pitcher of the afternoon Anthony Tzamtzis picked up the win and is now 1-1.
The teams will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
