BLACKSBURG - Chad Pinder notched his team-leading fourth three-hit game of the season, but Virginia Tech could not muster much more offense and dropped an 8-0 decision to visiting VMI on Tuesday evening at English Field.

Pinder's 3 for 3 day, all singles, helped him raise his batting average to a team-leading .410, which is among the top five in the conference. He also has a team-high 14 multi-hit games this season, while Andrew Rash has nine, as he collected a pair of singles and Brendon Hayden was the only other Hokie with a hit.

VMI (12-15) starter T.J. Lighton allowed six hits and not a single walk as he recorded the shutout victory. He struck out three and faced three over the minimum as the Keydets turned three double plays in the contest. Lighton improved to 3-2 on the season.

His offense spotted him a six-run lead in the top of the second as the Keydets sent 10 men to the plate and the first seven reached base. Ray Lopez hit a bases loaded two-RBI single to bring home the first two and that's all Lighton needed.

Tech (18-8) had won its last 14 Tuesday games dating back almost two years - its last loss was on March 29, 2011 versus Radford (7-5) - and are 17-2 on Tuesdays since the start of the 2011 season.

The Hokies will now turn their attention to the upcoming ACC series with No. 4 Florida State. They will host the Seminoles for three games this weekend at English Field starting on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
