BLACKSBURG - There was no letdown for the Hokies on Tuesday night. After sweeping Duke over the weekend and returning to the top 25 in the national rankings, No. 24 Virginia Tech plated five first-inning runs and cruised to a 16-6 non-conference victory over Liberty at English Field.
Kyle Wernicki jump-started the offense with a two-run home run, the first long ball of his career, and back-to-back doubles by Chad Pinder and Tyler Horan was followed by a two-RBI triple by Mark Zagunis and Tech was on top 4-0 still without an out in the first.
Zagunis would later hit a solo home run in the third frame, while Andrew Rash and Sean Keselica each hit two-run home runs in a seven-run fourth frame that broke the game wide open.
Keselica, who also got the start on the mound, went six innings, allowed four runs on eight hits and picked up his second win of the year. Luis Collazo worked two innings and struck out two and Sean Kennedy struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.
Zagunis and Rash each drove in a team-high four runs, while Wernicki and Pinder scored three times. Pinder, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games, had three hits for the Hokies.
Liberty (14-7) used nine pitchers in the game and saw Blake Fulghum drop his record to 1-1 with the loss. Ryan Cordell led the Flames with three hits and two RBI.
Tech (17-5) takes a couple days off before heading to Florida to take on Miami in a three-game ACC series in Coral Gables. Friday's and Saturday's games are set for 7 p.m. starts, while Sunday has a 1 p.m. first pitch.
