BLACKSBURG - No. 14 Georgia Tech used a pair of home runs, including a grand slam by Daniel Palka, to take the first game of the three-game ACC series opener from No. 24 Virginia Tech, 11-1, on Friday evening at English Field.
Yellow Jacket Zane Evans also drove in four runs, which included a two-run home run in the second inning, which was all the run support Georgia Tech starter Buck Farmer (3-0) would need.
Farmer took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Gary Schneider doubled off the righty with one out in the sixth. He later came around to score on a Chad Pinder single, the only earned run allowed by Farmer in 27 innings pitched this season.
By that point, Georgia Tech (13-1, 1-0 ACC) was leading 7-0 and added four runs in the top of the ninth to finish off the scoring in the contest.
Virginia Tech (11-3, 0-1 ACC) had its chances as the team left eight men on base including runners on second and third in both the sixth and seventh innings, when the Hokies were trailing 7-1 at the time.
The two teams will resume the three-game series on Saturday with a 2 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
