WILMINGTON, N.C. – For only the second time since 1993, the Virginia Tech baseball team has opened a season with four straight wins, 2009 and this year, after the Hokies picked up their fourth win of the weekend after defeating UNC Wilmington (2-2) on Sunday evening, 7-2, at Brooks Field. With the victory, Tech extended its non-conference winning streak to 22 straight, the third longest run in school history.
The Hokies scored five runs over the first two frames as Mark Zagunis knocked home one in the first with a single and two with a double in the second, with Gary Schneider scoring a pair. Zagunis tied a career high with four hits in the game, and also added a runs scored and two stolen bases to his totals.
The five runs were all Tech pitching staff would need as starter Tanner McIntyre worked six quality innings, allowing just two earned runs on three hits. He did not allow a hit after the second frame. His six innings were a career-high at Tech as was his eight strikeouts.
Jake Joyce was perfect over the final three innings to pick up his first save of the year. He struck out four, one shy of his career high.
Tech (4-0) will take the week off before bringing Temple and Holy Cross to English Field this upcoming weekend. The Hokies will face the Owls in their home opener on Friday at 3 p.m.
Additional Notes: With their two wins over UNCW this weekend, the Hokies have evened the series with the Seahawks at 10-10. Head Coach Pete Hughes is now just 12 wins shy of 500 for his career, 16 shy of 200 at Tech. The Hokies opened the 2009 season at the Courtyard by Marriot Classic in Spartansburg, S.C. with four wins and are now 11-1 in their last three four-game series to open the season (3-1 last year in Kennesaw, Ga.). Joyce has now retired 10 straight batters, his career high is 12 straight, while he now has thrown 25 perfect frames in his career.
