BLACKSBURG, Va. – By the exact score they defeated Boston College the past two days, the Virginia Tech Hokies posted another 8-4 victory over the Eagles at English Field on Sunday afternoon, giving them the series sweep.

It was the team’s first ACC home sweep since also taking three games from Boston College during the 2010 season. The win improved the Hokies to 22-12 overall and 5-10 in the conference, while Boston College dropped to 13-19, 4-11 in the ACC.

And just like the prior two days, Boston College jumped out to a 2-0 lead without the aid of a hit in the first frame on Sunday. Two walks and a wild pitch put two Eagles in scoring position and both came home on an error.

Tech responded with a single run in the second – a Chad Pinder sac fly scored Johnny Morales – and a two spot in the third – a Morales RBI single, scoring Mark Zagunis, and another Pinder sac fly driving in Tyler Horan.

Boston College put another two runs on the board in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead at 4-3. Spenser Payne and Matt Pare started the inning with a single and double, respectively – the first two hits off Tech starter Eddie Campbell – putting them in scoring position.

Tanner McIntyre came in from the pen, but could not keep the pair from scoring as Payne came in on a John Hennessy ground out and Pare came home on a wild pitch.

The Hokies tied the game back up in the home half of the fourth with Brendon Hayden and Alex Perez both doubling, the latter driving in the former.

They pushed two runs across the plate in the fifth, on Andrew Rash’s second double of the game to give the team the lead, and in the sixth, on a two-RBI single from Ronnie Shaban for some insurance.

Clark Labitan threw the final three frames of the game, allowing just three hits and striking out two as he picked up his first save of the year. McIntyre won his second of the season after three frames of scoreless relief with just one hit and two strikeouts. Campbell struck out three in his three innings of work.

Five Hokies notched multi-hit games, led by Zagunis’ season-high four hits. Morales, Shaban, Rash and Hayden all had two hits each, while Shaban, Rash and Pinder each drove in two runs. Horan, who drew a pair of walks, scored a pair of runs, as did Zagunis.

Tech will take a day off before heading just south to face Radford at RU Baseball Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Hokies will look to continue their ACC win streak next weekend when they will host top 10 Miami in a three-game series, starting Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Additional Notes: It’s the first time the Hokies have ever won three straight games by the same score (since 1950). The home series win is the first since May14-16, 2010 when Tech defeated Duke, 2-1. The last home sweep was over the Eagles on April 30-May 2, 2010. It’s the first Hokie ACC sweep since April 22-24, at Maryland. Tech now takes a 15-14 lead in the all-time series versus Boston College. Coach Hughes is now 8-5 against his former team, while he was 9-7 against Tech as BC’s head coach. He has now won nine straight conference games in the series (on either side) in Blacksburg. Mark Zagunis has now reached base in 26 straight games. The Hokies are now 18-2 when either tied or leading after six frames, 20-2 after the seventh.
