BLACKSBURG, Va. – Chad Pinder, Tyler Horan and Johnny Morales each drove in three runs to spark a 13-run evening for Virginia Tech as the Hokies defeated visiting Wofford College, 13-4, at English Field on Tuesday night as part of Military Appreciation Night.
Pinder was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, pushing his team lead to 16, and also scored three runs. Horan had two hits, including a two-run home run, his eight of the year, and also scored three times as well. For each, it was the seventh multi-RBI game of the year, while Morales notched his sixth.
The Hokies (19-12) got on the board in the first when Morales plated Gabe Ortiz, one of two runs scored for the senior. They broke the game open in the second, with a five-run frame, with Carson Helms, Morales and Mark Zagunis each driving in one and Pinder bringing home two with his first double of the day.
Wofford (11-18) left 12 men on base in the game, including two each in the first, second and third innings. In the fourth, the Terriers put two on the board on a Matt Doyle two-RBI single, one of two hits for the right fielder.
Tech answered in the bottom of the frame with Horan’s two-run shot, and then scored two more in the sixth, responding to a single run by Wofford in the top half, and three in the seventh.
Zagunis had three hits in the game, which extended his hitting streak to a team-high tying 12 games, while also extending his reached base streak to 23 in a row. Brendon Hayden had a pair of hits, Alex Perez scored a pair of runs and Andrew Rash drove in one and scored another.
Picking up the win for the Hokies was Eddie Campbell, improving to 4-0 this season. He came in from the pen and tossed four innings, allowed just two hits, one run and struck out a career-high seven batters. Devin Burke, who started the game, went four frames as well and struck out a career-high six batters. Sean Keselica finished the game in the ninth. Mason Bradley (0-2) started for Wofford, who used five pitchers in the game, and suffered the loss
The two teams will face each other again on Wednesday at English Field with first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m.
Additional Notes: Tech has now won 12 straight non-conference games. The Hokies are now 14-2 when notching 10+ hits, 12-2 when they score first, 10-1 when they strike out 10+ batters and 10-1 when Pinder hits a double.
