BLACKSBURG, Va. – Duke struck early again on Sunday and held on to beat Virginia Tech, 5-3, in the final game of the three-game ACC series with the Hokies, sweeping the set at English Field.

The Blue Devils improved their record to 11-14, 4-5 in the conference, while the Hokies dropped to 17-9 overall and 2-7 in the ACC.

Duke staked its claim to the game’s first lead – which the Blue Devils did all series – by plating three runs in the top of the second, the big hit a two-RBI single from Matt Berezo, who scored two batters later on a double-steal attempt.

The Hokies scored their first run in over 15 frames in the series thanks to Mark Zagunis, who hit a one-out triple to center and then scored on a Tyler Horan groundout in the third to make it a 3-1 game.

Alex Perez helped Tech cut its deficit to one in the fifth. He scored on a Horan sacrifice fly – his fourth RBI of the series – after doubling to lead-off the frame and moving to third on a Zagunis sacrifice bunt.

Jordan Betts gave the Blue Devils a couple of insurance runs in the seventh with a two-run home run over the center field fence.

The Hokies added their final run in the bottom of the ninth, an RBI single from Johnny Morales that scored Chad Pinder.

Robert Huber improved to 3-3 on the season with the win on the mound for Duke, while David Putman notched his second save. Andrew Aizenstadt suffered his first loss of the season and is now 2-1.

Tech will play four road contests this week, heading to Harrisonburg for a midweek game at James Madison, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., before travelling to Tallahassee for an ACC series at Florida State over the weekend.
