BLACKSBURG, Va. – Andrew Aizenstadt threw four-plus innings of solid relief which coincided with the Virginia Tech offense finding its groove, and the Hokies were able to register another come-from-behind victory, this time a 9-6 victory over Cornell at English Field on Tuesday evening.

With the win, their 11^th comeback victory of the season, their eighth when trailing entering the fifth inning or later and their ninth straight over a non-conference opponent, improved the Hokies’ record to 16-6, while Cornell fell to 9-3 on the season.

Tech did put the first run on the board in the first inning – after an hour and 53 minute delay due to rain – with Mark Zagunis drawing a lead-off walk, moving to second on a failed pick-off attempt then scoring on Ronnie Shaban’s 60^th career double, which tied him for second all-time on the school’s list.

Cornell, though, plated four runs in the top of the second, sending nine men to the plate with Marshall Yanzick, Brian Billigen and Chris Cruz all driving in a single run in the frame.

The Hokies cut their deficit to 4-2 with another single run in the bottom of the third – with Tyler Horan scoring an unearned run. It was the fifth inning, though, that turned the tide in Tech’s favor, as they plated five in that frame and added two more in the sixth.

Andrew Rash plated one with an RBI double, Kyle Wernicki notched an RBI single and Zagunis plated two with a single, which put the Hokies ahead, 7-4.

After Cornell scored its only run off Aizenstadt – and unearned run – in the sixth, Tech got a two-out two-RBI single from Gabe Ortiz to push its cushion to four at 9-6.

Aizenstadt (2-0, who struck out five in the game, took over for Eddie Campbell, who went 1.2 innings in relief of Tech starter Patrick Scoggin (2.0 IP). Jake Joyce ended the game for Tech, allowing a run in the ninth, but struck out two. Big Red’s Rick Marks suffered the loss and is now 2-1 on the season.

The two teams will face off again on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
