BLACKSBURG, Va. – For the 10th time this season, Virginia Tech has seen itself fall behind an opponent and come back to claim a victory, seven times after the fifth inning. The most recent was Tuesday evening versus Radford at English Field as the Hokies trailed 3-1 in the sixth but scored six unanswered to post the 7-3 non-conference victory.
With the win, the team’s seventh straight non-conference victory in a row, Tech improves to 13-4 overall, while the Highlanders fell to 8-9 this season.
Radford jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Josh Gardiner and Zach Costello registered back-to-back RBI in the third. After the Hokies scored an unearned run in fourth by Johnny Morales, the Highlanders pushed their lead back to two in the top of the sixth when Matt Mack scored on one of Tech’s three double plays turned on the evening.
Down two, Tech opened the bottom of the frame with three straight singles, by Morales, Chad Pinder and Jake Atwell, with Atwell’s scoring the previous two Hokies. After two outs and a walk, Brendon Hayden knocked in Atwell to give Tech its first lead of the night, one of two hits for Hayden.
In the seventh, it was Morales again with a one-out single, one of three hits for the senior, that started another three-run inning. Atwell notched his third hit of the game as well, two batters later, and Andrew Rash drove them all in as he blasted his fifth home run of the year to give Tech some breathing room at 7-3.
Eddie Campbell (2-0), who entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of starter Patrick Scoggin, picked up the win on the mound for the Hokies after 3.1 innings of work and one earned run allowed. Both of them struck out three in their time on the mound. Andrew Aizenstadt finished off the game with a perfect ninth and two more strikeouts. Radford used four pitchers with Derrick Brewer suffering the loss.
Tech’s busy week continues with another midweek home game against Wagner on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before the team heads to No. 14 Georgia Tech for its second ACC weekend series of the year.
