BLACKSBURG, Va. - A half-dozen Virginia Tech baseball players have been identified as top prospects after their efforts during the 2011 summer baseball season in the various leagues across the country. Tyler Horan, with two selections, highlights the group that includes summer-league teammate Chad Morgan. Cape Cod League teammates Joe Mantiply and Andrew Rash and Coastal Plain League teammates Patrick Scoggin and Chad Pinder were also named.
Redshirt-sophomore Horan played for the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League and led the league with 11 home runs and 35 RBI, and was named to the Perfect Game USA Summer Collegiate All-America Team as a second team selection in the outfield. Horan was named a top prospect from the NECBL by both Baseball America, at No. 10, and by Perfect Game USA, at No. 6.
Morgan, also a redshirt-sophomore, batted .300 with 13 runs and 22 RBI for the Westerners and was identified by Perfect Game USA as the No. 34 prospect in the league. The organization named the top 40 from the NECBL. (See complete NECBL list).
Limited in their playing time, but still making impressions were Mantiply and Rash. Perfect Game USA named the top 100 prospects in the Cape Cod League with Mantiply, a junior who pitched in just three games, as the No. 45 prospect and Rash, a redshirt junior who played just 14 games, as the No. 65 prospect. (See complete Cape Cod list).
Perfect Game USA identified the top 50 prospects in the Coastal Plain League, but the two Hokies - Scoggin and Pinder - found their names in the top 10 right next to each other after their performances. Scoggin, a junior, was No. 6 after posting a 3.76 ERA in 38.1 innings and striking out 46 batters. Pinder, a sophomore, was listed at No. 7 after collecting 20 hits, including seven for extra bases, and scoring 20 runs in just 23 games. (See complete Coastal Plain list).
A complete summer rundown of all returning Hokies will be posted on Hokiesports.com next week.
