Catching up with Katherine Butler
Junior discusses how proud she is to be a part of something as great as Hokie Nation
December 23, 2016
BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team boasts a roster of talented, skilled and interesting student-athletes. In an effort to learn more about their lives on and off the court, HokieSports.com will interview select Virginia Tech women’s tennis players each week.
This week, we sat down with junior Katherine Butler.
What differences are there from your hometown to Blacksburg?
Katherine Butler: Charlotte is a city compared to the town of Blacksburg. I have to drive everywhere in Charlotte, and traffic is terrible. Blacksburg is more scenic and smaller.
Where are your favorite spots to go on campus?
KB: My favorite spots on campus are the tennis center and the Torgerson bridge.
What got you involved with tennis?
KB: I started playing because my older sister used to play, so I used to tag along to her practices until I eventually developed a serious interest and wanted to go on my own.
If you could switch places with another Tech athlete, who would it be?
KB: MJ Ulrich or Kelly Henry, I can't decide. They both swim the same events, and they are my amazing roommates. They are awesome people!
Who do you look up to the most? Why?
KB: My older sister because she works so hard and has accomplished so much. She inspires and encourages me in so many aspects of my life.
How has your time been as a Hokie so far?
KB: It has been an incredible experience. I'm so proud to be a Hokie.
What has been your favorite memory as a Hokie so far?
KB: My favorite memory as a Hokie was when we beat Georgia Tech in the clinch last season.
What has tennis done for you?
KB: Tennis has done so much for me. From an early age, it taught me the value of discipline and hard work and learning how to make sacrifices. It has helped my competitive nature shine. Most importantly, it has brought me to where I am today: a student-athlete at Virginia Tech. I would not be the person I am today without tennis.
