Tech prepares to host 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships
Eight Hokies will participate this weekend

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 2014 edition of the USTA/ITA Regional Championship will take place this weekend, starting Friday, October 17th and running through Tuesday, October 21st at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Representatives from 22 other schools from up and down the east coast will join the Hokies in the tournament, including Virginia, Penn State, Maryland, James Madison, Richmond, William and Mary, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, Liberty, VCU, Radford, Temple, UMBC, Navy, Old Dominion, George Washington, St. Joeseph’s, Longwood, Duquesne, Delaware, Marshall, and Norfolk State.

Among the Hokies in action this weekend will be standout Illinca Stoica, who has earned herself a No. 2 seeding in singles play and will be taking on William and Mary’s Maria Groener in the first round. Elena Cerezo-Codina is the next highest ranked Tech player with a 9-16 seed and will take on Maryland’s Kristina Hovsepyan to kick off the weekend. Rounding out the lineup for Virginia Tech will be Katherine Butler, Sansitha Nandakumar, Kelly Williford, Raluca Mita Mariana Silva and Francesca Fusinato, who will be making her 2014 debut coming off an All-ACC third team performance last season as a freshman.

The tournament will begin Friday at 9 a.m. with a round of qualifying singles followed by the first round of doubles play. The main draw for singles will begin on Saturday morning.
