BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 2014 Hokie Fall Invitational began Friday morning at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center starting with a round of singles play followed by two rounds of doubles play. Hokie junior Kelly Williford recorded the first win of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mariami Dolashvili of UMBC, while teammates Katherine Butler and Laura Ramthun both followed up with victories over opponents from Penn State. Butler defeated Kelly Mengel 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, while Ramthun took care of Melissa Minniti by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
The Hokies performed well in the first round of doubles play as well. Butler and Williford defeated UMBC’s Shannon Cleary and Madlena Kurasz (8-2). Katie Barton and Mariana Silva took care of Wofford’s Emily Erickson and Brooke Graham (8-2) while Frances Peyton and Laura Ramthun topped Jennifer Christhilf and Aishu Iyer of UMBC (8-6).
In the second round of doubles play, Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandukumar defeated Dominique-Chante McLean and Maria Orenella of Morehead State (8-2) after receiving a bye in the first round. Raluca Mita and Illina Stoica also earned a victory after a first round bye, defeating Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver of Radford (8-1).
Play at the Hokie Fall Invitational will continue tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. with two rounds of singles play followed by a round of doubles.
