BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team returned to its winning ways Sunday morning, topping UMBC 6-1 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
Tech (5-1) got out to a great start, claiming the early doubles point as Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford eased to an 8-1 defeat of UMBC’s (0-6) Kim Berghaus and Isabel Aldunate in the No. 1 spot. Raluca Mita and Mariana Silva clinched the point when they defeated Shannon Cleary and Heidi Danielsson, 8-2, at No. 3. At the No. 2 spot, Isel Martinez-Marcos and Emily Lauten were up 7-3 on Madlena Kurasz/Josefin Stange Jonnson at the time of the decision.
Stoica’s day surprisingly ended very quickly as she earned the Hokies their first singles point of the day after just one set. Berghaus was forced to retire due to injury, leaving the No. 1 match at a 1-0 decision.
Lauten cruised to a No. 6 victory as she defeated Kurasz, 6-0, 6-0, and Willford clinched the match for the Hokies with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Aldunate in the No. 2 spot. Tea Ivanovic added to the Tech total when she picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Cleary in the No. 5 slot.
Stange Jonnson earned UMBC’s only victory of the day when she defeated Carol Kahoun at No. 4 (1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12)). Mita rounded out the day for the Hokies with a come-from-behind, three-set win over Danielsson (3-6, 6-0, 6-3).
