BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team begins the 2013 spring season on Sunday, January 20 with a double-header at the Burleson-Burrows Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. The Hokies open play with a 10 a.m. match against Davidson followed by a 3 p.m. match against Navy.
Tech enters the spring season with six freshmen on the roster. Leading the freshman class for the Hokies is Kelly Williford, who is ranked 119th after a 7-3 fall season, which included a win at the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
Newcomers Raluca Mita, Frances Peyton, Laura Ramthun, Mariana Silva and Ilinca Stoica all look to contribute to the Hokie effort this spring, as well.
Tech also return five players from last season. The senior leadership will come from Emily Lauten and Megan Conley, while juniors Isel Martinez-Marcos and Tea Ivanovic and sophomore Carol Kahoun bring valuable experience to a young Hokie squad.
The Hokies competed in six fall tournaments in preparation for the spring season, including two hosted by Tech.
At the helm for the Hokies is Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods in her 10th season with the Hokies. She welcomes newly-hired assistant Martin Sayer, a former tennis-standout at Radford.
After Tech’s double-header Sunday, the Hokies will be back in action on Friday, February 1 as the host Louisville at noon.
