McCarter set a school record for goals scored in a season for her high school team
February 21, 2018
BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer program is unveiling its 2018 signing class in a new way. Rather than releasing them all in one story, the Hokies will announce a new signee each week in a “Get to Know” format until all of the incoming freshmen have been announced.
The next player to be featured is Emmalee McCarter, a 5-foot-6 forward from Charleston, South Carolina. She currently attends James Island Charter High School and will look to pursue a degree in engineering at Tech. She plays for Brain Garvin and Kimberly Cohn as a forward for the Trojans and earned three letters so far and will be the team’s captain during her senior season. She set a school record for most goals scored in a single season with 38 goals as a freshman and was the Golden Boot recipient freshman through junior year. McCarter was named to the all-region and all-state teams in 2017 and was a NCSAA Girls High School All-Atlantic Region.
McCarter’s club experience includes playing for three seasons under coach Tomasz Kluszczynski for the South Carolina United FC. She played the first season in the Region 3 Premier League, her second season in the National League, and her most recent season in the ECNL. In both the National and ECNL seasons, the team was the first to represent the club in both leagues. The team was also ranked No. 1 nationally during a portion of the 2016 season as the squad was a three-time state champion as well as a finalist in the 2016 Southern Regionals.
“Emmalee is an attacking player who can play in the midfield or up front,” Tech head women’s soccer coach Charles “Chugger” Adair said. “She’s dynamic. She’s good one-v-one and great around goal. She has a quiet personality, but when she steps on the field she gets into it and makes her impact known. She comes out of the South Carolina area and is someone that’s going to be a surprise. I think she’s really going to make an impact and help us offensively moving forward.”

Why did you choose Tech? I chose Tech because the school gives me the opportunity to pursue both my academic goals of studying in the engineering program as well as my athletic dream of player Division 1 college soccer.
What was your favorite thing about your visit? My favorite part of my visit would be the Hall of Fame of all the athletes that have achieved success from VT inside of Lane Stadium.
What do you like about the Tech soccer program? I like the atmosphere that is brought by the coaches, and how they can make the activities we do fun as well as knowing when it is time to become serious in order to get things done.
What are your soccer strengths? My soccer strength would be my ability to see and read the field in order to make split second decisions to complete the play.
Who is your favorite pro player (why)? My favorite player would be Carli Lloyd (current USA women’s national team player) because of her willingness to give her all in order to achieve success. Meaning that she is not afraid to fight for what she believes in. Also I admired her technical and tactical work on and off the field.
What is your most memorable soccer moment (why)? My most memorable soccer moment would be the 2016 Southern Regionals in which our team had made it to the finals, and was losing 1-0 for the majority of the match. Then, in the final minute, my team had taken a free kick and the ball bounced back outside of the 18-yard box and I took advantage of the opportunity and scored to tie the game. After the goal, there was a whole team celebration that was unforgettable.
What do you think you will major in? Engineering
What's one thing you'd want Tech fans to know about you? I want Tech fans to know that I cannot wait to be a part of HOKIE Nation!
