McGlynn is back with the USA U-20 National Team

Tech's sophomore goalkeeper joins the squad for a third time since June

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s soccer goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn has spent the past week in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, training with the United States U-20 Women’s National Team in preparation for the 2017 Women’s Nike International Friendlies that start today.

The event marks the first time the four-team tournament is being held in conjunction with the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase and it features the U.S. Under-20 WNT taking on Brazil, England and Finland. The Americans will face England tonight at 6:30 p.m., the first of three matches the team will play over the next five days. McGlynn is one of three goalkeepers on the U-20 WNT and is no stranger to the squad. Back in July, she was with the U-20 WNT as it embarked on a four-game European Tour and less than a month ago (Nov. 16-23), she was with the team during a training session in Sunrise, Florida. Since 2014, she has been in the national team pool of players and has been invited to almost a dozen camps in that time.

“Being involved with the U-20 Women’s National team is always so amazing and humbling,” McGlynn said back in June before the trip to Europe. “It’s definitely one step closer to a short-term goal of mine, which is making the U-20 World Cup roster for next summer.

“I have been doing a lot of traveling with the national team and it’s definitely tiring. However, I am so grateful for the opportunity to represent my country and do what I love at the highest level. Plus, I get to explore the world with an amazing group of ladies and create memories that will last forever. Every camp makes me a stronger goalkeeper, mentality and physically.”

The sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, has started all 34 matches she’s played in her two seasons with the Hokies while posting an 18-10-6 overall mark with 130 saves, a .769 save percentage and a 1.095 goals allowed average. She has 12 career shutouts, while her seven during the 2017 season ties her for the second-most ever in a single season at the school.

This year, the Nike Friendlies are being used in preparation for World Cup qualifying as the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will be played in France next August.
