Hokies drop heartbreaker to NC State, 1-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech dropped a heartbreaker to NC State, 1-0, in double overtime in ACC women’s soccer action on Sunday evening at Thompson Field. The Hokies fall to 7-6-4 overall and 1-5-3 in conference play, while NC State improves to 12-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in ACC action.
The match was evenly played through out the entire contest. Neither team could mount much offense in regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period. Shots were even 6-6 at the end of regulation.
NC State scored on its first chance in the second overtime period. Maxine Blackwood took a pass from Paige Griffiths in the box and netted the match’s lone goal in the 102nd minute, breaking the scoreless draw.
NC State out shot the Hokies 8-6, while both teams had four shots on goal each. NC State goalkeeper Sydney Wooten earned the shut out, making four saves, while Mandy McGlynn had three saves in goal for the Hokies.
NOTES
Tonight was Senior Night for Virginia Tech, as the Hokies honored Madi Conyers, Alani Johnson, Kari Johnston, Kallie Peurifoy and Michelle White in pregame ceremonies.
McGlynn’s three saves gives her 127 for her career. She is now sixth on the Virginia Tech all-time saves list, in just her second year of competition.
Tech concludes the regular season on Thursday night, as they host Syracuse. Game time is 7 p.m. at Thompson Field and the match will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.

“I’m disappointed in the result tonight. There’s no doubt about it. I think we fought hard, but didn’t play our best at times, intensity-wise. I thought with the first push of the second half; I would have liked to have seen us get the result there. But we didn’t get the result. We didn’t put our chances away and left our selves susceptible to that overtime game that can go either way.
“NC State, to their credit, hung in and were tough competitors today. They were solid and it was a game that could have gone either way. I was just disappointed in the end result.”
