Tech's dominating second half keys ACC road win

Virginia Tech scored twice in the second half to claim a 2-1 win at Notre Dame in ACC women’s soccer action Sunday morning. With the win, the Hokies improve to 7-4-4 overall and 1-3-3 in conference play. Notre Dame falls to 7-5-3 overall and 3-3-1 in ACC action.

Scoreless throughout much of the first half, Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead into intermission on a goal in the 37^th minute by Monica Flores. In the second half, Tech knotted the contest at 1-1 on a goal by Madi Conyers off a pass by Kallie Peurifoy in the 50^th minute. Tech netted the game-winning goal in the 83^rd minute on a goal by Jordan Hemmen off the rebound of a shot by Kari Johnston.

Tech dominated play and the statistics in the second half. The Hokies out shot the Fighting Irish, 15-9, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half. Tech also held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks, which included a 9-2 advantage in the second half.

The match, originally scheduled for Saturday night, was moved to Sunday at 11 a.m. due to torrential rain in the South Bend, Indiana area. Today’s game was played, for the most part, in a steady rain.

NOTES

Conyers goal was her first of the season and the sixth of her Virginia Tech career.

Hemmen’s goal was her second of the season and second of her Virginia Tech career.

Peurifoy recorded her second assist of the season and 10^th of her career. Johnston recorded her first career assist.

Tech’s defense held the Fighting Irish to just two shots on goal.

This was the Hokies’ final regular season road match of the season. Tech returns to Thompson Field on Thursday night at 7 p.m. against nationally ranked North Carolina. Tech wraps up the regular season at home against NC State and Syracuse.
