Tigers break open tie match in second half

Virginia Tech lost to Clemson, 3-0, at Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina in ACC women’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The Hokies drop to 6-4-4 overall and 0-3-3 in conference play, while the Tigers improve to 8-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in ACC action.

The two teams battled to an evenly matched scoreless tie in the first half. Following the intermission, the Tigers got on the board early in the second half, on a goal by Miranda Weslake in the 55^th minute. Clemson upped the lead in the 64^th minute on a goal by Jenna Polonsky and closed out the scoring in the 84^th minute, as Patrice DiPasquale scored on a penalty kick.

Following the third goal, the match was suspended for one hour and eight minutes due to lightning. The second half of the match was played in rain, which became torrential following the lightning delay.

The Hokies outshot the Tigers, 12-10, but Clemson held the advantage in shots on goal, 7-6. Tech had four corner kicks and goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn recorded four saves. Clemson goalkeeper Sandy MacIver recorded six saves.

NOTES

The Hokies return to action on Saturday night, as they play at nationally ranked Notre Dame. Game time is 7 p.m. and the match will be shown on ACC Network Extra.

Following the Notre Dame match, the Hokies will complete the regular season with three consecutive home matches.

“Disappointing result for us today. I thought we played very well in the first half. We had the best chance of the game in the first half and didn’t take it. “

“They came out and we gave up an unfortunate rebound goal off a corner that put us behind, chasing the game. Then gave up another rebound opportunity in the second half, a follow up for the second goal.”

“It was a bit of a sloppy second half. The weather and the storms stated coming in. We played solid for 45 minutes and didn’t do as good of a job defending in the second half and didn’t take any of the chances we had. Should be frustrated with the aspect that we didn’t put the ball in the back of the net when we had some good quality chances. We have to keep working hard and get ready for Notre Dame next week.”
