Mandy McGlynn named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

Sophomore goalkeeper records career-high in saves vs. BC

Virginia Tech women’s soccer goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 1.

McGlynn, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, played all 110 minutes en route to her fifth shutout of the season in a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Boston College. McGlynn recorded a career-high 11 saves on a night in which the Eagles peppered the Hokie defense with 22 shots for the game. Her 11 saves also rank tied for second on this season’s ACC’s single-game saves lists, and she stands second in the league with 54 saves this season. McGlynn owns 10 career shutouts in just 28 career matches at Virginia Tech.

McGlynn is fifth in career shutouts at Virginia Tech and eighth in career saves. Her 1.04 goals against average is third-best in school history, as is her .789 save percentage. Friday night’s match was her second consecutive match recording as career-high in saves, as she had eight saves against Florida State last Sunday.

This is the first time McGlynn has been honored by the ACC Office. Virginia senior forward Veronica Latsko has been named this week’s ACC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Hokies return to action on Thursday night, as they travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to take on nationally-ranked Wake Forest. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in Spry Stadium and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
