Hokies fall to No. 23 FSU, 2-0

Mandy McGlynn records career-high eight saves

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech fell to No. 23 Florida State, 2-0, in ACC women’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field. With the loss, Tech is now 6-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play. Florida State improves to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in ACC action.

The match was scoreless through the first 45 minutes, as neither team could mount much of an advantage. After the intermission, Florida State got on the board in the 53^rd minute, as Deyna Castellanos netted a penalty kick following a Hokie foul in the box. FSU closed out the scoring a little more that three minutes later, with a goal from Dallas Dorosy, off an assist from Castellanos in the 56^th minute.

Florida State controlled the stats, outshooting the Hokies, 23-6, including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. FSU had 11 corner kicks, limiting the Hokies to just five corners. Mandy McGlynn recorded a career-high eight saves for the Hokies.

NOTES

With her eight saves today, McGlynn now has 101 saves in just 27 career matches. She ranks ninth in career saves at Virginia Tech. Her 1.08 goals against average is third-best in Virginia Tech history. She is seventh in career saves percentage at Virginia Tech at .771.

Tech is now 0-16-2 all-time against the Seminoles.

The Hokies return to action on Friday night, as they host Boston College at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field. The match will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.

“We did a good job in the first half, balancing and keeping our spacing and defending. They are a good side. We limited chances in the first half, which we were happy with.”

“We created some chances of our own in the first half, but didn’t create so many in the second half and that was frustrating for us.”

“Giving up a goal, 6-7 minutes after the half was a bit of a bummer. Off of a penalty, a really unnecessary penalty on our part. We have to be a little bit more patient defending. Once we gave up that first goal, we had a chance to equalize it and it didn’t go in for us. It’s just how it went, unfortunately.”

“They are a good team and are going to create chances against anybody. We have to weather that storm and I think we did a good job. A lot of those shots were from distance.”
