Hokies, Pitt battle to 1-1 draw

Virginia Tech played to a 1-1 draw with Pittsburgh in double overtime on Thursday night in ACC women’s soccer action at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh. Tech is now 6-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play, while Pitt is 3-4-3 overall and 0-1-1 in ACC play.
The match was scoreless entering the intermission. In the opening minutes of the second half, senior Alani Johnson put Tech on the board, when she scored on a breakaway in the 47th minute. Pitt scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute on a goal from Mikayla Schmidt, on an assist from Bel Van Noorden. Both teams had chances in regulation and the two overtime periods, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Statistically, the Hokies held a big advantage throughout the game. Tech outshot the Panthers, 23-10, including 17-6 in shots on goal. The Hokies held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks, not allowing the first Pitt corner until the first overtime.
Hokies goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn recorded five saves. Pitt goalie Katelyn McEachern grabbed 12 saves on the evening.

Tonight’s match concluded a four-match road swing for the Hokies.
Alani Johnson scored her 24th career goal in tonight’s match. She is now tied with Emily Barnhart for eighth place on the Virginia Tech all-time scoring list. Johnson also recorded her 51st point in tonight’s match.
Tonight was a homecoming for Mikayla Mance, a native of Pittsburgh, who attended Yough High School.
The Hokies return home this Sunday, as they open the home portion of their ACC schedule against nationally ranked Florida State. Kick-off at Thompson Field is 1 p.m.

“I thought we did a lot to create chances tonight, We had 24 shots and forced the goalkeeper for Pitt to make 16 saves. Credit the Pitt team as well, for their effort in keeping us off the scoreboard as they had four team saves as well.”
“We did not do a good enough job taking chances and putting the game away. The team and I are frustrated with that aspect of the game. We need to regroup and be ready for a very good FSU team on Sunday.”
