Hokies fall at No. 4 Duke, 3-0
Tech opens ACC slate with first of two straight road games

Virginia Tech dropped its conference opener to fourth-ranked Duke, 3-0, in ACC women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. With the loss, the Hokies fall to 6-2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Duke improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The match was scoreless through almost the entire first half. Duke got on the board and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime on a penalty kick goal by Chelsea Burns in the 43rd minute.
After the intermission, Duke went up 2-0 in the 51st minute on a goal by Ashton Miller off of a pass from Imani Dorsey. The Blue Devils completed the scoring in the 59th minute on a goal by Dorsey off an assist from Karlie Paschall.
Duke outshot the Hokies 10-6, including 7-4 in shots on goal. Fouls were even at 12-12 and Duke limited the Hokies to just two corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn recorded four saves in the game, as did Duke goalkeeper EJ Proctor.
NOTES
The Hokies return to action on Thursday night, as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Hokies open the ACC schedule with two road contests. This is the second consecutive season that has occurred for the Hokies.
Tech opens its 2017 ACC home schedule next Sunday against nationally ranked Florida State. Game time is 2 p.m. at Thompson Field and the game will be shown live on ACC Network Extra.
The Hokies were shutout for the first time this season. It was the first time Tech had been shutout in a loss since Sept. 25, 2016, a 4-0 loss to Duke at Thompson Field.

“I was happy with the first half performance. I thought the girls really played well, stuck to the game plan and kept the game fairly even. It was a good battle. Unfortunately, we gave up that penalty with only three minutes to go in the first half and it put us at a little bit of a disadvantage coming out in the second half. It really made us chase the game.”
“I was disappointed in the second goal. We had a chance to clear it and didn’t get it cleared. We weren’t able to convert our chances and they took their chances. ”
“I thought the overall effort was good from the group for most of the game. I thought Mandy played well, considering she gave up a couple of goals. I thought Alani worked very hard up top.”
“Duke is a good side, a top 10 program who is very capable and experienced team. Some of that experience showed through. It was a difficult match for us.”
“I was pleased with the effort and we have to move on and get ready for a very good Pitt team in our next ACC conference game.”
