Hokies open ACC play at No. 4 Duke on Sunday

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will head south to Durham, North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., for their first ACC match of the season, as they take on the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils.

The Hokies, 6-1-1 on the season, are coming off a tough 3-1 loss at Tennessee on Sunday night. Freshman, Allyson Brown netted the lone goal, her third goal of her career. Duke is enters the match 7-1 on the season and is ranked fourth in the USCA poll.

Overall, Tech is 4-10-1 all-time against Duke, but won the last time the two teams met in Durham, 4-2, in 2015. Duke defeated the Hokies, 4-0, in Blacksburg last season, but Tech is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings between the two teams.

Alani Johnson and Allyson Brown lead the Hokies’ offense with three goals each. Johnson has moved up into ninth place in career goals and tied for eighth in game-winning goals at Virginia Tech. Tech is fourth nationally in corner kicks.

Defensively, Mandy McGlynn continues to rank second in the ACC in shutouts and third in goals against average, while ranking 14th in shutouts in the NCAA stats. Over the summer, McGlynn travelled to the Czech Republic, England and Germany while playing for US Soccer U-19 and U-20 teams.

Leading scorer for the Blue Devils is senior Imani Dorsey with six goals this season. Last season, Duke advanced to the quarterfinals of the ACC championship, but fell to Florida State, 3-2.

The Duke match will be live streamed on the ACC Network Extra. After another away game against Pittsburgh Thursday, the Hokies will host nationally-ranked Florida State next Sunday at 2 p.m. at Thompson Field.
