Hokies fall at Tennessee, 3-1

Virginia Tech lost at Tennessee, 3-1, in women soccer action Sunday night at Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Hokies suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 6-1-1, while Tennessee improves to 8-0 overall.

The Volunteers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play on a goal by Mary Alice Vignola. Tennessee took a 2-0 lead into intermission following a goal by Katie Cousins in the 34^th minute.

Tech cut the lead to 2-1 in the 58^th minute of action on a goal by Allyson Brown. Tennessee increased the lead in the 82^nd minute on a goal by Meghan Flynn to give the Vols the 3-1 final decision.

Tennessee outshot the Hokies, 13-12, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. Mandy McGlynn recorded two saves in goal for the Hokies.

NOTES

With the defeat, the all-time series between Virginia Tech and Tennessee is knotted at 1-1-1.

This is the Hokies’ final non-conference match of the season. Tech finishes with a 6-1-1 non-conference record for 2017.

This was the second of four consecutive road matches for the Hokies. Tech is 2-1-1 away from Thompson Field this season.

Tech returns to play next Sunday, as they begin ACC play at nationally ranked Duke. The match is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

“This was a very challenging match for us and the start really put us behind, giving up a goal so early. A minute and a half in we found ourselves down due to a mistake and they capitalized. It was a little bit of a shaky half to follow that, giving up another goal on a turnover at mid-field.”

“We regrouped very well at halftime. The second half we came out real strong. We really took the tempo and the rhythm of the game through the second half. We got a goal back and I’m really proud of the girls with the effort they gave in that second half to get back. Unfortunately, we gave up that third goal near the end and we were pressing a little bit.”

“We made a few mistakes and the other team was able to capitalize more than we were able to on the actions we had. “

“It was a very challenging game, a competitive game that we will be able to learn from as we move forward into conference and play strong teams and we look forward to our conference play.”
