Hokies head South for a pair of matches

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will play its next two matches in the State of Tennessee this weekend, as they play a Thursday night match at ETSU and a nationally televised game at Tennessee on Sunday evening.

The Hokies, 5-0-1 on the season, just completed a successful four-game home stand on Monday night, as they defeated Longwood, 1-0, at Thompson Field. Alani Johnson tallied the Tech goal in the ninth minute.

All four of the home wins over the stretch were shutouts for the Hokies and Tech has recorded five shutouts in the six games so far this season. Sophomore Mandy McGlynn has allowed just one goal in her 563 minutes of action this year. McGlynn ranks near or at the top of all ACC goal keeper statistics.

Offensively, Johnson leads Tech with three goals, giving her 23 for her career. Six other Hokies have recorded one goal each this season.

Nationally, Tech ranks second in corner kicks, trailing only Boston College. Tech is sixth in both goals against average and shutout percentage and is eighth in save percentage. Individually, Johnson leads the nation in game-winning goals. McGlynn is fourth nationally in shutouts, eighth in goals against average and 11th in save percentage.

Tech is 2-0 all-time against ETSU, both wins shutouts for the Hokies and both in Blacksburg. This is Tech's first trip to Johnson City. The Bucs enter the match 2-3 on the season, following a 4-1 loss at Radford on Tuesday night. Tech is 8-4 all-time against Southern Conference schools.

Sunday’s meeting with Tennessee will be Tech’s third all-time meeting with the Volunteers. Tech is 1-0-1 against the Vols, a 2-1 win in 2007 in Blacksburg when Tennessee was ranked 13th nationally and a 1-1 draw in 2015 at Thompson Field. Kristina Diana scored her first career goal in the 88th minute for the Hokies.

The ETSU game will be streamed live on ESPN3. The Tennessee match will be shown nationally on ESPNU. Live stats will be available for both games.
