Hokies host two matches over Labor Day weekend

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will close out this four-game home stand over the long Labor Day Weekend, as they host William & Mary on Thursday night and Longwood on Monday night at Thompson Field.

The Hokies, 3-0-1, on the young season, have used staunch defense and timely scoring during the first four matches. The defense, led by sophomore goal keeper Mandy McGlynn, has allowed just one goal in nearly 400 minutes of action.

Offensively, the Hokies got five goals from five separate players in the pair of victories over the weekend. Four of the five goals, all in the 4-0 win over College of Charleston, were first-ever goals from each player. In all, six separate Hokies have tallied at least one goal this season, with senior Alani Johnson the only player with multiple goals.

William & Mary come to Blacksburg with a 4-0 record, which includes a win over the ACC’s Boston College. Tech won the last meeting between the two schools, 2-1, in Williamsburg last season, but trail 5-2 in the all-time series.

Longwood is currently 2-1 on the season, but will play twice more before Monday’s match. Tech is 7-0 all-time against the Lancers and are 5-0 against Longwood in Blacksburg, including victories at Thompson Field in each of the last two seasons.

The Longwood match will be Red, White & Blue Night, with each of the first 100 fans receiving red, white and blue bandanas.
