BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team shutout the College of Charleston 4-0 in the Hokies home opener on Friday night at Thompson Field.
Sophomore Jordan Hemmen opened the scoring for the Hokies on a shot down the middle off the double assists from Allyson Brown and Madi Conyers set-up Allyson in the 23rd minute. Freshman Brown scored her first collegiate goal a minute later on an unassisted breakaway from the left side.
The third goal of the first half came off a corner kick as senior Kari Johnston put a header in to the net.
After taking a 3-0 lead into the second half, Tech added another goal early in the frame, as Lilly Weber finished on Katherine Roth’s deflected shot.
The Hokies controlled the offensive end of the field for much of the game, outshooting the Cougars, 21-7, including an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. Tonight’s game marks the first time the Hokies have scored at least four goals in a game since Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, when Tech beat ECU 5-1.
Tech returns to action on Sunday afternoon, taking on Georgia at 2 p.m. at Thompson Field.

“I was happy. Charleston is a very good team … we really wanted a good start. That was key to the match, to control our tempo and assert ourselves on the game. We were able to do that throughout the run of play and scoring early helps. It always makes it a little bit easier when you can score earlier and settle into your game.”
“We played a lot of players and I was happy with the ball movement, the speed of play, the tempo and the night. It was a good thing for us and getting a shutout was good, too.”
“The younger players played well and some of the midfield play was really great as well, to create chances for the forwards. The forwards moved well and they were dangerous. I was happy with that. It’s good for us to build on that moving forward.”
