The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 1-0 double overtime victory over the University of San Diego on Friday night in San Diego. This was the season opener for both teams.
Alani Johnson, a senior forward from Virginia Beach, Virginia, scored the game’s only goal with 1:46 remaining in the second and final overtime. The assist went to Mikayla Mance.
The Hokies controlled the offensive end of the field for much of the game, outshooting the Toreros, 11-4, including a 6-1 advantage in the second half. Tech’s goalkeeper, Mandy McGlynn saved the only shot on goal she faced in the contest.
NOTES
Tech returns to action on Sunday afternoon, against Pepperdine, as they conclude play in the University of San Diego Tournament. Game time is 11 a.m. Pacific/2 p.m. Eastern time.
This was a homecoming for head coach Chugger Adair, who was an All-American at San Diego and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of San Diego.
Tech starter Kelsey Irwin also enjoyed a homecoming in the game, as she is a native of San Diego.
