Hokies prep for 2017 season with two scrimmages this week

BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will hit the pitch for a pair of scrimmages this week in preparation for the start of the 2017 season.

The Hokies will host Liberty at 7 p.m. on Thompson Field on Tuesday night and then host UNC Charlotte at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at Thompson Field. Both matches are free and open to the public.

A very talented squad will take the field this season for the Hokies, featuring 20 returning players and an outstanding freshman class. Tech should be led by senior forward Alani Johnson, who was second on the team in scoring last season with six goals. Fellow senior Madi Conyers returns in the midfield for Tech. Sophomore Kelsey Irwin returns on defense and is joined by fellow sophomore goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, who spent a portion of the summer with the US Soccer Under-20 Women’s National team. The Hokies return four of their top six scorers from last season, but must replace all-time leading scorer Murielle Tiernan and defensive standout Candace Cephers, both of whom earned All-ACC and All-Region honors last season.

The Hokies, led by seventh-year head coach Chugger Adair, will begin the regular season on Aug. 18 and 20, as they travel to the University of San Diego Tournament. Tech will face the host Toreros on the 18th and then nationally-ranked Pepperdine on the 20th. The Hokies will play its home opener on Friday, Aug. 25, as they host the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
