April 6, 2017
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s soccer coach Charles “Chugger” Adair announced Thursday that Alice Hamel (Springfield, Virginia) will join the Hokies as a walk-on for the 2017-18 season.
“We want to welcome Alice with open arms to our VT women’s soccer family,” Adair said. “Alice is a proven, quality goalkeeper who will come in with a competitive spirit. She will compete with our core goalkeepers from the start. With her playing ability and overall soccer talent, Alice is a wonderful addition to the team.”
A goalkeeper at West Springfield High, Hamel earned three varsity letters under coach J.T. Alukonis. She also competed for the Lee-Mount Vernon Soccer Club (LMVSC) for three years and was named a team captain.
Additionally, Hamel currently represents the Olympic Development Program (ODP) at the state and regional level and is known as a very athletic goalkeeper with the ability to make match-winning saves. In 2016, she was a member of the Virginia Region 1 Girls’ ODP team that competed in Vancouver, Canada, for a national title.
“I love the friendly atmosphere of the school and the beautiful campus,” Hamel said. “Being able to play the sport that I love at a place like Virginia Tech was something I just couldn't give up! Tech has so many opportunities for someone like me who is undecided in their major. It can help me find the field that I will love. I am extremely excited to see what my freshman year has in store!”
The daughter of John Hamel and Karen Summers, she will enroll in university studies.
