Tiernan, Cephers earn All-ACC recognition

BLACKSBURG – Seniors Murielle Tiernan and Candace Cephers of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team were honored with 2016 All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) awards, as selected by the league’s coaches on Thursday. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

Tiernan was named to the All-ACC First Team list for the third year in a row, while Cephers landed on the third team ballot for the second time in her career.

Tiernan, a native of Ashburn, Virginia, is tied for first in the conference with five game-winning goals on the year. She also ranks fifth in the league with 10 goals and paces the squad with 20 points. Tiernan now has 49 career goals and 112 career points, both atop the all-time lists at Virginia Tech. She also leads the all-time lists in game-winning goals (23) and multiple goal games (9) and is tied for seventh in assists (14).

Tiernan, a 2016 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate, was most recently named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Oct. 27. The Academic All-District Team award honors the nation’s top student-athletes for their performances on and off the field.

Cephers, a native of Aurora, Colorado, has played a pivotal role at the midfield position, starting every match for the Hokies’ this season. She ranks third on the team with three goals and one assist, totaling seven points on the year. She now has 16 career goals and 33 career points.

Clemson’s Eddie Radwanski was voted the conference’s Coach of the Year. Virginia’s Alexis Shaffer was named the league’s Offensive Player and Midfielder of the Year, while Duke’s Christina Gibbons was named the Defensive Player of the Year. North Carolina’s Bridgette Andrzejewski was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year.

Tech concluded its 2016 regular season with an 11-5-3 overall record and a 3-4-3 mark in ACC play, closing its slate with a 1-0 victory over Wake Forest on Oct. 27, in Blacksburg. The NCAA Division I Selection Show will air on Monday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m.
