Playing in its fourth straight double-overtime game this season, the No. 25-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 setback at Miami on Sunday afternoon, at Cobb Stadium, in Coral Gables, Florida.

A goal by Miami’s senior forward Gracie Lachowecki scored her second goal of the game and gave the Hurricanes the 2-1 advantage they needed in the 102nd minute of play. Freshman midfielder Lauren Markwith and senior defender Emily Auld each recorded a helper on the go-ahead score.

Miami netted the equalizer and sent the game into overtime with only five minutes remaining in regulation when Lachowecki scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from junior midfielder Grace Rapp in the 85th minute.

In another back-and-forth affair, Tech controlled the stat line, finishing the game with a 14-12 shot advantage. The Hokies placed seven on-frame and held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Senior forward Murielle Tiernan put the Hokies’ on the scoreboard first, scoring her ninth goal of the season. Tiernan finished off a cross from senior forward Bria Dixon inside the 18-yard box, placing the ball far left post past Miami’s senior goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the 51st minute.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Blayne Fink marked her third career start, as Fink made four saves in the loss compared to Tullis-Joyce’s six.

“I thought we played well enough to win. We seemed in control after going up 1-0, but we made an error that allowed them to get back in the game. It was frustrating that we didn’t close the game out. It was a great game for both teams, and we just couldn’t close the game out.”

Today’s game was Tech’s fifth overtime game of the season … The Hokies hold a 9-5-3 all-time series advantage over the Hurricane, as head coach Chugger Adair now owns a 4-1-1 record … Tech has not lost to Miami since the 2010 season … With today’s 2-1 setback, the Hurricanes ended the Hokies five game unbeaten streak … Tech is 7-0-1 when scoring two or more goals this season … With today’s start, Tiernan is now tied for fifth all-time in games started with 82 matches … Tiernan (9 G) owns a team-best nine goals, pacing the team with 18 points, followed by junior forward Alani Johnson with 12 points (6 G).
