BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech and No. 13 Clemson battled to a 2-2 draw in ACC women’s soccer action Saturday night at Thompson Field.

Tech, now 8-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in conference action, got on the board first, as senior Candace Cephers headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from senior Marie Johnston in the 22^nd minute of play. The goal is Cephers third of the season.

Clemson tied the match at one each on a goal in 53^rd minute by Jenna Weston off of a corner kick. After intermission, Clemson took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Julie Macklin once again off a corner kick.

The Hokies, who out shot the Tigers, 22-19, continued on the attack and scored to tie the match in the final minute of regulation, as Johnston again had a corner kick which, in a scramble in front of the net went off a Clemson defender to knot the score at 2-2.

In the two overtime periods, both team shad multiple chances, but neither squad could find the back of the net.

“I think we were definitely better going forward tonight. We’ve played some very good teams in the conference so far and Clemson is another very good team as well. A top 20 team for sure.”

“We were happy to get the first goal tonight. That was key for us. We didn’t want to go into the halftime chasing the game like we had been over the last couple. That first goal allowed us to get some confidence after a rough start in the ACC.”

“It was nice to see the whole group play with some passion and determination tonight. I think that’s what carried the tie for us.”

“We had a slow start to the second half and they scored a couple of goals off some set pieces and they are very dangerous on them. But I think we were able to play ourselves back into the game.”

“I was impressed with our starting group, the first 20-25 minutes. I thought we played well and were organized defensively. We kept to the game plan defensively and when we had possession, we were able to get numbers forward and possess with some quality, which was good for us.”

NOTES

This was the Hokies’ first overtime match of the season and the first overtime match since No. 7 Virginia Tech battled No. 1 Florida State to a scoreless draw on Oct. 22, 2015

This was Tech’s third consecutive overtime draw. The last time Tech won an overtime match was a 4-3 victory over Georgetown in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament, at University Park, Pennsylvania.

NEXT UP

The Hokies hit the road for a two-game road swing at Syracuse on Thursday, Oct. 6 and at Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 9. Tech returns home on Sunday, Oct. 16 for a match against Louisville at 1 p.m.
