BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team welcomes No. 13 Clemson to town for another Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) showdown on Saturday, Oct. 1, with first kick from Thompson Field set for 7 p.m.
Saturday’s contest will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra through WatchESPN and the ESPN app. The match also falls on National Cookie Day. Admission is free, and the team will give away free cookies to the first 200 fans at the game.
Tech (8-4-0, 0-3-0) is 6-3-3 all-time against Clemson (8-2-1, 2-0-1) and has won the last seven of eight contests. Last season, the Hokies suffered a rare 3-2 setback against the Tigers in Clemson, South Carolina, for the first time since 2005. The game was tied at two apiece, before Clemson’s junior forward Shannon Horgan scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute. Of note, Tech has not lost to Clemson in Blacksburg since the 2004 season.
In its last outing, Tech dropped a 4-0 decision to NCAA runner-up Duke on Sept. 25. Clemson also played North Carolina to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Sept. 25, at Riggs Field. Both teams had a week off in preparation for Saturday’s contest, as they did not play a midweek conference matchup.
The Hokie offense is averaging 1.67 goals scored per game, and Tech is 5-0-0 when scoring two or more goals this season. Junior forward Alani Johnson and senior Murielle Tiernan own a team-best five goals, tied for the seventh-best total in the ACC. Johnson (5 G) and Tiernan (5 G) also pace the team with 10 points each.
The Tigers rank first in the conference in five offensive statistical categories: total goals (35), total points (112), goals per game (3.18), total assists (42) and assists per game (3.82).
Senior midfielder Catrina Atanda paces the team with 21 points (9 G, 3 A).
The Tigers also are seventh in the conference with a 0.80 goals-against average. Senior goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan shows a 0.98 goals-against average and has made 26 saves in nine games.
Of note, Southgate Drive will be closed on Saturday. Please plan your travels accordingly.
