BLACKSBURG – In the midst of rainy weather conditions, the No. 19 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 18 North Carolina, tonight, at Fetzer Field, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Tech (8-3-0, 0-2) had several opportunities at the net, earning nine shots on-goal to UNC’s five, but the cross bar got the best of the Hokies this evening. Senior midfielder Candace Cephers, junior midfielder Madi Conyers and sophomore midfielder Kristina Diana tallied three shots for the Hokies.

Cephers had a fantastic look in the 37th minute, using her head to flick the ball toward the back of the net from six-yards out, but the ball hit the cross bar to soar out of bounds. Diana also had a chance in the 57th minute, blasting a bullet from 25-yards out. UNC’s goalkeeper Lindsey Harris took a high jump and managed to get her hands on it, as the ball rolled off her fingers, hitting the top of the cross bar once again.

The Tar Heels first got on the board in the 14th minute. Forward Maya Worth played a through ball to forward Zoe Redel just inside the penalty box. Redel used quick footwork to pass the ball to the top of the 18, as midfielder Annie Kingman chipped the ball past a challenging freshman goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn and toward the far right post. It was Kingman’s third goal of the season.

North Carolina (6-2-1, 1-1) padded its lead in the 31st minute. Forward Bridgette Andrzejewski took a shot from 10-yards out that bend around McGlynn and went far left post.

Fresh out of the locker room, Andrzejewski scored the Tar Heels’ third and final goal of the night in the 69th minute. Forward Kasey Parker and midfielder Dorian Bailey each recorded an assist on the play.

Harris earned the clean sheet with 10 saves. McGlynn tallied two saves in her 11th start with the Hokies.

“I thought we created some chances, but we didn’t take them. Looking at it, we outshot them and created some good opportunities. We made some bad decisions in the attacking third, and we gave up an early goal, which was a bummer. Then we were chasing the game. Giving up the early goal was frustrating. I thought the girls played hard, and I am proud of their effort. We have to do better in the attacking third. We lost the game in the penalty box by allowing them to take chances.”

“We have to rebound from this and be ready to go against a very good Duke team coming to Blacksburg. We have to get back to work tomorrow, but I’m proud of the girl’s effort tonight.”

NOTES

Tonight’s match featured a Hokie team that controlled the stat line, outshooting the Tar Heels, 16-14 … The teams each tallied two corners ... Andrzejewski finished with a game-high six shots, tallying two scores for the Tar Heels this evening … North Carolina now holds a 13-2 all-time series advantage over Tech.

The Hokies will return home on Sunday, Sept. 25, for a matchup against NCAA runner-up No. 7 Duke. First kick from Thompson Field is set for 4 p.m. Links for live stats are available at HokieSports.com.

Sunday’s match also is “Orange Effect” night at Thompson Field. Admission is free, and fans are encouraged to wear orange in support of the Hokies. The team will giveaway orange metallic pom poms and free ice cream to the first 100 kids at the game.
