No. 18 Hokies close nonconference slate at home
The Hokies ride a three-game win streak into tomorrow's match

BLACKSBURG – The No. 18 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team closes its 2016 nonconference season with a match against Longwood on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Thompson Field. The contest is set to begin at 4 p.m.

Admission is free, as the team will celebrate Tech’s International student community. Tech students can enjoy a pizza social before the men’s squad welcomes Longwood at 7 p.m. that same evening.

The Hokies (7-1) ride a three-game win streak into tomorrow’s match, recording two 3-0 shutouts over Indiana on Sept. 9 and Boston University on Sept. 11 in the Tech Women’s Soccer Tournament last weekend.

Four out of the team’s seven wins have been shutouts, tying for seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in shutout percentage (0.50). The squad also ranks No. 8 in goals-against average (0.63). Tech has held its opponents to 59 combined shots.

Junior forward Alani Johnson is tied for fourth in the ACC with five goals (10 points). The Virginia Beach, Virginia native has tallied three game winners for the Hokies this season, the most in her career.

Tomorrow’s meeting is the Hokies seventh against the Lancers (2-5), marking the third year in a row that the Hokies will have faced the Lancers. Last season, the Hokies defeated the Lancers, 4-2, in Blacksburg. Tech holds a 6-0 all-time series record.

In its last outing, Longwood tallied a 1-0 win against UMBC on Sept. 11, with junior midfielder Janese Quick recording the game winner in the 59th minute.

LU’s Amanda Spencer, Janese Quick and Emillie Kupsov paces the team with one goal apiece. Junior goalkeeper Maria Kirby has played all seven matches in the net, allowing 10 goals and earning one shutout.
