BLACKSBURG – The No. 18 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team used its second straight three-goal effort of the weekend to defeat Boston University 3-0, today, at Thompson Field.

The Hokies (7-1) have now scored two or more goals in three straight games, and have not lost a match when scoring two or more goals this season. Freshman goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn earned the win, making five saves in 75 minutes of play for her third shutout of the season. Senior Blayne Fink also made one save in just 15 minutes of play.

Three different Hokies got in on the scoring action today, as junior forward Alani Johnson put the Hokies on the board first. Sophomore defender Megan Goudy sent the ball inside the goal box to a waiting Johnson. Johnson headed the ball past Boston University’s goalkeeper Hannah Ciolek outstretched hands, placing the ball in the far left corner of the net.

Sophomore midfielder Anissa Dadkhah gave the Hokies a two-goal advantage in the 44th minute, sending a header into the far upper right corner to tally her first goal of the season. The score came off a free kick from redshirt freshman defender Kelsey Irwin.

The Hokies wasted little time pushing their lead to 3-0, as junior midfielder Madi Conyers netted her second goal of the weekend in the 55th minute. Fresh out of the locker room, Conyers dribbled the ball all the way down the middle of the pitch, beating several BU defenders along the way, to place the ball just left of the goal post.

Tech finished the game with a 24-8 shot advantage. Tech and Boston University (0-8) also was awarded two corner kicks apiece.

BU’s Chelsea Churchill and Ann Marie Jaworski registered a team-high two shots on the day.

“We were focused, and we worked hard. I don’t think we were as crisp as we wanted to be. I thought we scored a couple good goals. Alani (Johnson) scored a really good goal with a good service from Megan (Goudy), so that helped set a tone for us moving forward. Then we scored off the free kick, which was good. It helped us separate ourselves from Boston University a little bit. They are a good team. They are a lot better than their record, but I was happy that we were able to take the flow of the game.”

“It was important for us to play a lot of players today. It’s important for the development of the team as well. We have to balance the minutes and keep everyone as healthy as we can. We just have to keep growing from there.”

NOTES

With the win, the Hokies are now 1-0 all-time vs. the Terriers … BU is the second and final first-time opponent VT faced in 2016 … Tech now owns a 2-0 mark over first-time opponents this year … Senior forward Murielle Tiernan had a team-best six shots on the day, followed by Laila Gray, Johnson and Dadkhah with three.

NEXT UP

The Hokies have a short week ahead of them, as they return to Thompson Field on Tuesday afternoon to cap off their non-conference slate with a 4 p.m. match against Longwood.

Admission is free, as the team will celebrate Tech’s International student community. Tech students can enjoy a pizza social before the men’s squad hosts Longwood at 7 p.m. that same evening.
