BLACKSBURG – A pressing attack and a stout defensive effort was the winning combination for the No. 18 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team tonight, as the Hokies earned a 3-0 victory over Indiana at Thompson Field.

The Hokies (6-1) played brilliantly on both sides of the ball, placing 11 of their 22 shots on-goal, as three different Hokies’ tallied one goal apiece. The Tech defense also swarmed the Hoosiers, holding IU (2-4-1) to just three shots on-goal.

Tech’s offensive attacked paid off early in the first half, as junior midfielder Madi Conyers connected on the team’s second shot in the 12th minute for her first goal of the season. The Chesterfield, Virginia, native settled on a through ball from sophomore defender Megan Goudy near the 12-yard line and sent a bending shot around Indiana's goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedieu toward the far left post. Freshman forward Bridget Patch also tallied an assist on the play.

Sophomore midfielder Kristina Diana added to the team’s advantage in the 21st minute, finishing an easy chip shot right in front of L’Hommedieu. The Fairfax, Virginia, native was in perfect position to score off a previously blocked shot from redshirt freshman defender Kelsey Irwin.

Buzzing all evening, Irwin iced the game in the 57th minute, connecting on a free kick from 35 yards outside the box. She directed it over L’Hommedieu’s shoulder and toward the right post for her second goal of the season.

Tonight’s shutout is the squad’s third of the season, as freshman goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made three saves on the night. L’Hommedieu finished with eight.

“We are just working on continuity with the group. We have a whole new back four, so we are trying to bring them together. We want them to get used to balancing each other out on the field. They have to stay together as a unit. We also have (senior midfielder) Candace Cephers fill in there as well, so those five connected and shaped up defensively.”

“We talked about intensity, and we talked about starting from the start of the game. Indiana is very strong to start, and we have been slow to start. Now all of the sudden, that was the key to the match. We had to come out ready to go and take the match under control from the start. I thought the girls did a great job starting and getting in a rhythm of a game attacking on offense.”

NOTES

With the win, the Hokies now hold a 2-1 advantage over the Hoosiers … Conyers and Diana scored their first goals of the season … Irwin also scored her second goal of the season.

NEXT UP

The Hokies return to Thompson Field Sunday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. match against Boston University. It will be the first-ever meeting between the squads. The Terriers played James Madison earlier this evening, as the Dukes picked up a 2-0 win over Boston University.

The team will collect non-perishable food items and small household appliances for the flood victims in West Virginia. All donated items will be given to the town of Clendenin, West Virginia.
