BLACKSBURG – Following a stellar offensive production last weekend, senior forward Murielle Tiernan has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Today’s honor is the third career weekly award for Tiernan, a 2015 National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s (NSCAA) All-America third-team nominee as well as a two-time All-ACC first team honoree. The recognition also is the second straight weekly conference honor for the Hokies this season, as junior forward Alani Johnson earned the honor the week of Aug. 29.
A native of Ashburn, Virginia, Tiernan scored all three goals for the Hokies’ last weekend.
Tiernan gave Tech a fighting chance in the 2-1 loss vs. Ohio State on Sept. 1, scoring the Hokies’ lone goal in the 64th minute to cut OSU’s lead to one. She also scored two goals in just 48 minutes of play at William & Mary, picking up a 2-1 win over the Tribe on Sept. 4.
Tiernan, a 2016 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate, is tied for sixth in the ACC with four goals on the year and is Tech’s all-time leader with 43 career goals. Tiernan and Johnson are now tied for a team-best four goals and eight points this season.
North Carolina’s Lindsey Harris also was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
The Hokies play host to the Virginia Tech Women’s Soccer Tournament this weekend at Thompson Field. Tech meets Indiana on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Boston University on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m. The match vs. Indiana will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra through WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
Friday’s match also is “Teddy Bear Bonanza” night. Admission is free, and fans are invited to bring new or gently used teddy bears and other stuffed animals to toss on the field after the game. All donated items will be given to the Carillion Children’s Hospital.
