BLACKSBURG – Two first-half goals from senior forward Murielle Tiernan delivered the No. 16 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team its fourth road win of the season, as the Hokies bested William & Mary, 2-1, this afternoon, at the Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field, in Williamsburg, Virginia.

The Hokies (5-1) were persistent in their offensive attack, especially in the first half, as Tiernan came off the bench to break the draw in the 27th minute and put Tech on the scoreboard. Tiernan, a 2016 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate, pounced on a soft touch-pass from junior forward Laila Gray at the top of the 18-yard box, beating the Tribe defenders with her speed before sending a low shot toward the far right post.

Tiernan then padded the team’s advantage just 14 minutes later, as she blasted a line drive from 35 yards out past the outstretched hands of Tribe goalkeeper Grace Smith to tally her fourth goal of the season and 43rd of her career. Freshman defender Jordan Hemmen tallied her first career assist on the play.

With a 2-0 lead at the break, William and Mary (3-2) came out firing on all cylinders, tallying five of its eight shots in the second half. The Tribe made it a one-goal game in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a penalty kick from junior midfielder Rachel Moore.

However, the Hokies’ offense did not allow the awarded penalty to be a momentum changer, as Tech continued to control the majority of the possession in the final 20 minutes of play.

Freshman goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn walked away with two saves in the win, while Smith finished with six. Tech also earned a 21-8 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

“Today was a good game for us. We controlled the match and tempo for the first half, with Murielle (Tiernan) taking two nice goals. We were a bit sloppy in the second half, and we weren’t as sharp as I would like us to be, but overall, I was happy with the result against a very solid William & Mary team.”

NOTES

With the victory, the Hokies have won their first match over the Tribe in Williamsburg, Virginia, for the first time in program history … VT is now 2-0 this season against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents … Tech also is now 4-0 when scoring two or more goals this season … Junior forward Alani Johnson recorded a team-best six shots this afternoon, placing four on-goal.

The Hokies play host to the Virginia Tech Women’s Soccer Tournament next weekend at Thompson Field. Tech meets Indiana on Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Boston University on Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
